Leigh is a large town in the south-eastern part of the Wigan borough, close to Chat Moss and the boundary with Salford. It developed from the neighbouring townships of Bedford, Pennington and Westleigh, growing rapidly during the nineteenth century through coal mining, cotton spinning and engineering. The result is a town with a strong industrial and market character.

Leigh Town Hall, Market Place, Bradshawgate and Railway Road form part of the historic centre. The town’s surviving Victorian and Edwardian commercial buildings reflect the period when its population and economy expanded dramatically. Pennington Flash Country Park, created around a large body of water formed by mining subsidence, is now one of the area’s best-known green spaces and an important wildlife site.

Although Leigh lacks a passenger railway station, it has significant bus connections. The guided busway provides services towards Salford and Manchester, while the A580 gives road access east and west across the region. The A579 connects towards Bolton and the motorway network, and Atherleigh Way helps traffic move around the urban area.

Housing varies from rows of traditional terraces and workers’ cottages to inter-war semis, post-war neighbourhoods and large modern developments. Bedford, Pennington and Westleigh retain local identities within the wider town, and newer housing has extended Leigh towards surrounding open land. Its location is convenient for employment in Wigan, Warrington, Bolton, Salford and Manchester, particularly for car and bus commuters. Leigh continues to combine an independent town centre, strong community identity, accessible green spaces and a strategic position between several major North West urban areas.

Sport forms another important part of Leigh’s profile. Leigh Leopards have a deep rugby league tradition, while Leigh Sports Village hosts professional sport and community facilities. The town also supports employment in healthcare, logistics, manufacturing and retail. These roles, together with continuing housing development, reinforce Leigh’s position as a regional centre rather than a suburb dependent entirely on Manchester.
